The Hebel Hotel

The Hebel Hotel

30-34 William Street, Hebel, QLD, 4486

The Hebel Hotel & General Store is a classic single-storey timber structure, with a tin roof and wrap-around veranda, fronted by convenient racking rails to tie up your horse. Hebel is a tiny town in south-west Queensland, on the Castlereagh Highway, just a few kilometres on the Sunshine State side of the border with NSW. It counts around 60 residents across the district.

The pub offers fuel, cabins and free camping, but for around a year it was closed due to COVID, threatening to relegate the township to history.

Saving The Hebel Hotel

This historic former Cobb and Co stop with wide, front verandahs and a large beer garden, oozes charm and character the minute you pull up.

But it became the pub with no beer when it closed its doors in 2020. That was until a local family headed by grazier Frank Deshon rode to the rescue and bought it.

“Frank’s viewed as a hero around here,” one happy patron told us.

Mr Deshon said the pub was “the epicentre”. “We had to save it, the local pub is the best thing for mental health out here in the bush,” he said. “It heals the heart and mind. It’s where you share your stories, where people have wakes and birthdays.”

What Our Customers Say

Fantastic spot for a beer, a meal and a stay. Stopped here on our travels. We’re mightily impressed. The old pub has a new lease of life and the cabins have been spruced up. We stayed in the older ones that have been renovated. Bed was comfy and the place was clean. Bathroom is a bit old but the shower was hot which is the main thing. Ate at the general store for dinner. Extensive menu that was executed perfectly. Had the rissoles and the pork belly. Both fantastic. Friendly staff and great coffee too. A must do in the bush!
